surface measurement while drilling (SMWD)

Hybrid Mud Logging

Recognizing that quantitative geological data is necessary for accurate geosteering, reliable well to well correlation, well positioning, and spacing, all with a view to enhancing production over the life of the well or field, DWL offers one of our newest services - Hybrid Mud Logging which aims to take quality of data delivery to a level and price unmatched by our peers.

Unconventional Challenges

  • Variable ROP in the ‘same’ formation
  • Variable hole stability in the ‘same’ formation
  • Uncertainty of being in the correct target zone
  • Variable stimulation performance between wells
  • Variable production between wells
  • Well spacing and ‘Parent/Child’ well interference

Overcoming Challenges

For all of these challenges there is one overriding solution; the acquisition of more geological data to better understand what is happening. Data for geologic and A.I. modelling, well correlation, trend observation, and well planning.

Current Solutions

  • Seismic – poor resolution for geosteering
  • MWD – limited geologic value through GR
  • LWD – expensive with risk of tool loss
  • Wireline – costly with limited use in horizontals
  • Coring – excellent data but costly and slow
  • Mud Logging – qualitative data only but economical

Must We Accept the Status Quo?

The current solutions are either inadequate for in-depth, field-wide analysis or are far too expensive in today’s cost-challenged environment to be used extensively. But is accepting the status quo the only answer?

Hybrid Mud Logging Delivers

  • Quantitative elemental XRF data
  • Consistent and comparable data from well to well
  • Reliably modelled lithology as standard
  • No more subjective percentages and descriptions
  • Digital images of rock samples
  • Images taken pre-analysis
  • Up to 50 samples caught and analyzed with XRF per day
  • Realtime total gas and chromatograph data as standard
  • Mass spectrometry a recommended option
  • Twice daily digital reports and logs
  • Reduction in personnel onsite
  • Compared to full onsite XRF+Mudlogging
  • Reduction in HSE risk

chemosteering

DWL Chemosteering

Our Partner's latest evolution in geosteering brings together the long-standing expertise that has been built up over many years, many wells, and many millions of drilled feet, with the power of real-time elemental data.

The combination of gamma ray, elemental data, and formation gas, allows us to successfully position any well in the most challenging geological environments.

Where tighter target zones are ever more common, and traditional gamma ray tools may prove to lack definition, We will always know where the hole is the positioned.  Unexpected faulting, carbonate flows, and otherwise invisible changes in shale mineralogy can all be identified and steered through, under, or over with Diversified's Chemosteering service.  We believe it's always best to know where you are.

Automated Remote Mudlogger

DWL's Automated Remote Mudlogger, ARM, is the oil and gas industry's only fully automated cuttings collection device.  The ARM is designed to collect, wash, wrap, and store up to 300 samples automatically. It is controlled remotely and samples may be viewed remotely with white or ultra-violet light

WHY THE ARM?

For Operators who believe that real rock data is key and where geological data is an absolute necessity for a successful field, the ARM will reliably, safely, and cost-effectively supply that data.  It's many advantages include

  • High resolution sample collection - up to one sample per minute
  • Ten to twenty grams of sample caught at a time
  • Washes, depth stamps (with barcode), wraps, and stores up to 300 samples
  • Samples viewed remotely under white and ultraviolet light
  • Weather resistant with a minimal footprint at the rigsite
  • Remotely operated with WITS connectivity

Operational Success

The ARM has been deployed on close to 30 onshore wells in the USA for companies that include Parsley, Diamondback, Permian Resources, Callon, ProPetro, Pearl Resources, PetroLegacy and Windy Cove Energy.  Its operation and benefits were highlighted in the following papers, co-authored with PetroLegacy in 2018 - IADC/SPE-SPE-189680-MS-MS and AAPG ACE Salt Lake 2018

In conclusion, the ARM proved to be a viable and reliable method of collecting and storing drill cuttings with minimal human intervention. It collected drill cuttings which when compared to human collection of the samples represented a greater than 300% improvement. This new technique for sample collection provides an important improvement in the areas of collection frequency and sample collection integrity. Using high resolution sampling and applying XRF analysis provides the opportunity to optimize wellbore completion through greater understanding of geomechanical properties.
